Quantive Results helped us layer smaller achievable goals into creating a larger impact that ultimately led to us financially surviving COVID.

Kim Stegeman
Founder & Executive Director, Rose City Rollers

Challenge

Like many sports leagues, Rose City Rollers (RCR) was hit hard by COVID. With a footprint reaching from their local community to the international level, RCR is an example of a small organization that makes a big impact.

During the pandemic, RCR needed to adapt to accommodate social distancing guidelines, while also supporting their community of skaters. The league had to consider new revenue streams, like outdoor skating events and non-skating events like drive-in movies, to boost income and keep the community engaged.

Rapidly shifting their offerings meant the team needed to adapt and coordinate quickly. New initiatives meant new priorities, and as a result, new demands for a way to manage it all. Team goals needed to be clearly articulated and measured.

Solution

The Rose City Rollers’ goal-setting process consisted of high level, open-ended goals discussed in board meetings, yet they weren’t always measurable or clearly tied to action plans. This made it difficult to pinpoint accountability and measure success.

Kim “Rocket Mean” Stegeman, Founder and Executive Director of RCR, knew a strategic shift was needed to encourage team-wide transparency and alignment. She found Quantive Results could clarify the unknowns through formal goals structures and measurable outcomes.

The habit of OKRs made a measurable impact on RCR immediately:

“Simply the act of documenting the goal and giving it a timeline has been tremendously effective — having to negotiate and identify who owns a goal has been illuminating.”

Rocket Mean realized that Quantive Results’ helped her team measure both quantitative and qualitative goals through OKRs — the quantitative through typical goals like revenue targets, and the qualitative (that are typically harder to measure) through a tracking method for operational and cultural initiatives. By pushing the team to develop key results to signal objective achievement, qualitative goals became easier to quantify and monitor throughout the quarter.

Outcomes

The Rose City Rollers didn’t just change their approach to strategic goals. They increased team-wide communication, transparency, and prioritization through the Quantive Results’ Check-ins process. Clearly measured goals and regular progress check-ins helped RCR’s team build business flexibility and strategic predictive thinking during COVID.

Looking at the year in retrospect, Quantive Results helped RCR articulate and measure their goals, communicate, and execute better as a team. Building workflows to create and reflect on OKRs helped RCR take on the unprecedented challenges of COVID.

“This process helped us layer smaller achievable goals into creating a larger impact that ultimately led to us financially surviving COVID.”

RCR staff members complete their weekly Check-in on Fridays. Every Tuesday, the team reconvenes to review their goals. “While the reflection cycle isn’t a perfect habit yet, we see the value in regular Check-ins and the positive impact it has on our team.”

Their OKR cycle yielded results quickly, giving the RCR team a routine for goal progression. They have an intentional space to proactively identify goal progress, blockers, and how to pivot accordingly.

OKR software goes beyond the corporate world the drive impact. Rose City Rollers is another example of how Quantive proudly empowers every organization doing important work. With the right OKR capabilities, organizations can achieve their most ambitious goals and do what they do, better.
